Edouard Foxhall of Camden discovered sandalwood on Ile des Pins, New Caledonia, in 1840. Unknown in Europe before the end of the 19th century, the noble spicy wood displayed a proud pedigree: 'candana' in Sanskrit or 'sandal' in Arab. Refined anointing for body and hair, it warded off anguish and mingled, indescribable, with all the fumes of Asian incense.
