The euphoria felt by explorers and sailors at the sight of land after long months at sea has no equivalent... except for the perfumer's sense of elation at discovering ambergris and smelling it for the first time.

Ambergris is one of the few raw materials of perfumery from the sea. It is indeed a concretion produced by the sperm whale. These gray concretions that look like stones floating on the water and are exposed to the sun for a long time.

It is this prolonged stay on the surface of the water that gives them their olfactory properties. Ambergris is found on beaches, especially those of South America. The mysterious origins of ambergris give it an almost magical aura.

In the Thousand and One Nights, Sindbad the Sailor says he discovered on a remote island ambergris flowing from a fountain into the sea. The extraordinary scent of ambergris is warm, sensual and evokes honey, tobacco, animal notes and of course iodine and the sea.
